- WEED CONTROL UPDATE
It's July and the Sonar has been working to kill the Eurasian Watermilfoil. The beaches look good and have had big crowds at times. Boats are able to navigate the lakes with little trouble. Skiers, tubers, kayaks, fishermen and wake boarders are having a wonderful time.
To everyone who donated to our fund or put in time on the committee you should feel good about your effort. Our community is enjoying the lakes and that's what are goal is. It's just wonderful! By the end of the month, the milfoil you see should be laying down and not as visible. The cool weather has been a help in controlling the growth, however, the rain has had the opposite effect. The water volume has increased so we need more “bumps” in the treatment. I have not received notice of our cost as of yet. Thankfully, we will be able to handle the payment. With that in mind, we have to plan to replace the money used for this year’s treatment. We also have set the motion for next year’s LARE Grant. We need to make our friends and neighbors aware of the need for funds. Please pass the word to everyone. We will also be planning fundraisers and other methods of raising money in the months to come.
Enjoy and have fun with your family and friends!
- MAY GENERAL MEETING
Thursday, May 16, 2013 - 6:30 p.m. at POMPEII'S PUB
The La Porte Area Lake Association met May 16, 2013 at 6:30 at Pompeii’s Pub. Don Bowman led the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary’s report was read and approved as read. A motion was made by Dan Balich, seconded by Jeanette Lanski to accept the minutes. Treasurer, Sue Watts reported $11,450 in the LALA account as of May 9. The Horizon Bank account has a balance of $87,018.11 for the Weed Project. An additional $2400 was collected for this account but was spent for advertising to raise more money for weed control. One hundred fifty thousand ($150K) is the goal. Dan Balich, Weed Control Chair, reported on the weed treatment. The contract was awarded to Aquatic Control of Seymour. There is a delay in getting started due to weather conditions. By May 16, the milfoil had grown to one inch below the surface. It will take 60 to 120 days for the milfoil to drop. We were once again reminded of the invasiveness of this plant. One cut of
milfoil will produce 100 plants.
Sue Watts and Don Bowman authorized Jay Pouzar to spend $775 on trinkets to be sold at the LALA booth during the Maple City Grand Prix Boat races May 31-June 2. Rick White purchased and donated “cozies” for the Lake Association to sell, along with floating boat keys and insulated 6-pack coolers. LALA will receive the profits. A silent auction will also be held during the boat weekend with LALA receiving the proceeds to be used for weed control.
Paul Thode reminded the membership that the lake cleanup will be Saturday, July 13. Peggy Hartman will prepare lunch to be served to the clean up crew.
Donna Pouzar asked for information about the computer purchase. Dan Balich made a motion that $1000 be made available to purchase a laptop and printer, seconded by George Mares. Motion passed.
The Yacht Club asked for the LALA mailing list. The organization does not give out e-mail addresses. Anytime an organization comes to LALA for email addresses, the requesting group may write a letter expressing their needs or interests. The letter will then be printed in the newsletter.
Cade Cooper asked for money to fund a lake patrol. A motion was made by Roger Galloway to send $200 to Cade Cooper to be used to benefit a lake patrol program. The motion was seconded by Stan Lanski.
